Two of the most popular themes on the App Store are doodle graphics and physics puzzlers. Combine the two, and you get Doodle Bomb. Experienced players will likely find it too simple for their tastes, but otherwise it sets a new standard for future physics puzzle games.
In Doodle Bomb, your goal is to place a bomb near a green switch box in order to turn it on and open a door. The twist is that you will need to deal with other obstacles first. This is often done by activating blue switch boxes, which turn on wheels and elevators.
Learning to use the various elements to your advantage is how you succeed in Doodle Bomb. For example, hitting a mouse on different parts of its back will result in the bomb bouncing in different directions. Red-striped platforms blow up your bomb on impact, which can help you hit hard-to-reach switches. Patrolling soldiers can be dealt with in a multitude of ways: simply avoid their line of vision, bonk them on the helmet to make them dizzy, or if your timing is good enough, blow them up from behind. If they see the bomb at any time, though, they will shoot it down.
A much more interesting use of graph paper than homework.
While it may sound difficult, don’t fret: the game is fairly easy until the very end. Practical solutions almost always apply and can be figured out with little more than a glance. There is some skill involved in scoring under par to unlock the master levels (35-50), but with a bit of practice this shouldn’t be a problem. We would have liked Doodle Bomb to be a bit more challenging, although this design choice will definitely appeal to the casual audience that enjoys doodle-aesthetic games.
Doodle Bomb’s control scheme feels natural: just tap anywhere on the screen to throw a bomb. Where you tap in relation to your character determines the power and direction of the shot. Also worth mentioning is the charming hand-drawn art, which stands out even among other doodle-themed games.
We enjoyed what Doodle Bomb has to offer, but more difficult level packs would make for a great update. If you like physics puzzles, you should consider purchasing this title.
