Today’s featured game, best as we can tell, is another Korean mobile port, and it plays like a cross between Zenonia 2 and the side-scrolling Castlevania games.
Demon Hunter- The Return of the Wings should not be confused with Demon Hunter – Fight or Die, which is a Minigore-style shooter. Return of the Wings is a side-scrolling action-RPG where you play as a kid named Gun who finds himself lost in a realm of demons and magic. A demon called Greed who has haunted Gun’s dreams tempts him with power, but Gun chooses to side with the Demon Hunters instead to bring down Greed and his minions.
Demon Hunter’s story is fairly complex, and it hurts the game significantly that the English translation is so poorly handled. The lengthy, text-based cutscenes can be aggravating to read through, and the text-based tutorials can be equally tough. This game needs some localization, stat.
Once you start playing, though, you’ll find a fairly interesting combination of action and RPG elements. Gun can switch between a sword and gun, equip armor and items, and perform an incredible amount of special moves. The platforming can be a little clunky, probably since this game hasn’t changed much since its past life as a mobile title, but fighting a ton of enemies and earning experience is quite fun.
Demon Hunter- The Return of the Wings is a bit rough around the edges, but it’s worth trying if you’re looking for a deep action-RPG. And until we get a version of Castlevania that’s not about dropping colored blocks, we’ll take what we can get in the gothic horror genre.
