Billabong: Surf Trip Hands-On Preview and Video

On an overcast day in Irvine CA, we made our way to Billabong headquarters. Billabong and Chillingo have been working on a new surfing game called Billabong: Surf Trip, and we were invited to be a part of the official announcement event. In addition to some time in the water, we also got some hands-on time with the upcoming game.

Billabong: Surf Trip is an arcade-style surf simulator. You’ll create a customizable character and learn to shred from the Billabong pro surf team as you travel to the world’s best beaches.

Some of the beaches include Huntington Beach (USA), Teahupoo (Tahiti) and Puerto Escondido (Mexico). The game features pros surfers Tiago Pires, Andy Irons, Taj Burrow and Joel Parkinson. The pros give your character objectives for each destination that will advance your simulated surf career.

The game itself ran quite smoothly during our demo. It features an impressive water engine that creates unique waves each time. The waves types are varied and will resemble the surf conditions of the real world locations.

Some waves will gather slowly, giving you time to prepare, and others will quickly bombard you. You can control your surfer with onscreen controls or tilt. The tilt controls were finely tuned and made catching waves feel more authentic.

The art style is bright and cartoonish, which makes the visuals pop. We did notice there were some stuttering and jagged textures, but hopefully these issues will be addressed before launch.

Billabong: Surf Trip has a lot of potential, and we could use a great surf game on the App Store. No release date has been announced, so stay tuned for more information.
