Mushroom 11

Unique puzzle adventure game perfectly suited to touch screens

I first saw Mushroom 11 running on an iPad what must have been over two years ago. It’s perfectly suited to touch screen controls and feels foreign on desktop. But the current climate means indie developers marketing strategy, as dumb as it is, is to release on PC first. Lots of reasons to do so, but inability to figure out how to market to mobile users effectively is a big part of it. With the whole marketing strategy now being bring a PC game to mobile and people will pay a bit more.

Enough about that, how about this game. It’s a really well done puzzle game where the players multitouch pushes move an amoeba like blob through a series of levels. Really well done, very unique, and fun!

Kingdom: New Lands

Kingdom: New Lands out on mobile, finally

Of all games I’ve played over the past year or more, I’ve played Kingdom and the New Lands expansion the most. I can best describe Kingdom as a one dimensional simulation game. The only way to move on the island is left/right while riding your mount. Along the way recruit troops, build an encampment and walls, defend your encampment, and try to get off the island. Remarkably simple, yet I have over 200 hours into the game, it’s very sticky and repeatable.

I’ve been beta testing the mobile version for a few months now and have come to love it more than the desktop version. I’m not 100% sure I agree with the way progress is saved on mobile (only at the dawn of a new day), but it’s has worked out well to save me a couple times. Well worth the download to see what a sim game can really be on mobile.

After the End: Forsaken Destiny

After the End is a beautiful story-based puzzle adventure

Nexon has released a very well done puzzle adventure in After the End: Forsaken Destiny. Great graphics and interesting and challenging puzzles. One of the the things that impressed me the most are the variety of the puzzles. From sound puzzles to memory puzzles, even arcade action puzzles. If you are looking for a new puzzle adventure — or maybe something light to quench your thirst for that new Zelda, give After the End a shot.

The Escapists

Escape prison in this open world simulation

The Escapists was a popular PC game that is now out on iOS. In this open world game with more than a little bit of a humor slant, the goal is to escape increasingly difficult prisons. Starting out in a cushy minimum security prison, gather items, craft and trade them to build what’s needed to escape. Each prison presents unique obstacles and there are multiple ways to escape each one. A very repeatable and fun game that works well on mobile. What took so long?

Evergrow

Evergrow is a polished and challenging puzzler

The premise of Evergrow is simple — combine the same color blocks to create a larger and larger square. The level based game play keeps the game from getting stale or too difficult too quickly. It all seems pretty standard, but something happened when I was playing the game, Evergrow grew on me. The little touches like haptic feedback, customization, and a great soundtrack set this apart from other simple puzzlers. Give it a shot!

Midnight Star Renegade

Midnight Star: Renegade from Industrial Toys out now

Industrial Toys has released it’s follow-up to the great Midnight Star. In Renegade, a much more casual game, the focus is on short bursts of play and the never-ending constant upgrading of weapons and gear. This game brings the great controls for a mobile FPS that the previous version had, but focuses less on the story and more on the frantic gameplay.
