Game of the Month, June 2011: Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing

June has been another fantastic month for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad games. Chop Chop Slicer, Feed Me Oil, Dream:scape, Hanging With Friends, Hard Lines, and Pudding Panic all wowed us with clever concepts and stylish implementation. But we could only pick one Game of the Month winner, and this month, it’s Sonic by a whisker.

Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing is exactly the kind of iOS game we like to see from the former console king. It’s built from the ground up to take advantage of the iOS hardware, unlike their string of shoddy Genesis ports. It’s also got online racing and a multiplayer arena accessible through Game Center.

Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing is especially rewarding if you grew up with a Sega console hooked up to the TV. Characters from the Genesis days race alongside Dreamcast stars, and the levels are as beautiful and alive as we remember from those classic games. This is, by far, the best kart racer on the App Store.

Our runner-up for Game of the Month is Tiny Tower, from NimbleBit. A natural extension of their previous game Pocket Frogs, Tiny Tower lets you collect and manage itty-bitty employees in your virtual skyscraper. You can hurry them along using Tower Bux, which can be earned by playing fun elevator operator and Where’s Waldo-style minigames.

Tiny Tower has extraordinary detail in each little character’s appearance and each floor’s storefront. Random chance imbues everything you do, making this game not only rewarding, but also fiendishly addictive. Not only that, but it’s also free.

Congratulations to Sega and NimbleBit for creating two amazing, absolute Must Have iPhone games this month. Now, on to July!
