Game of the Month, December 2013: The Room Two

As usual, December was a great month for iOS gamers, with big games dropping every week (at least until the yearly week-long App Store shutdown over Christmas). But one game in particular blew us away with its moody atmosphere and excellent design, so we had to give it this month’s highest honor. The game is The Room Two.

The Room Two is a puzzle game shrouded in mystery, wrapped in an enigma, and sealed with an indecipherable stamp. You’re placed in various rooms, full of mechanical puzzles you manipulate using taps and swipes. It’s up to you to figure out what to do to open the room’s exit– and it always takes a lot of steps that are challenging yet extremely satisfying to figure out.

If you get stumped– and you will get stumped often– you can tap the hint button that gives you a handful of increasingly helpful hints to help you solve the next step in the puzzle. The Room Two is one of the best puzzle games we’ve played in a very long time, and that’s why we named it our Game of the Month for December.

Our runner-up for Game of the Month is Republique, a stealth action game that puts you in the shoes of a hacker helping a woman escape from an unjust imprisonment. You view the game through security cameras, and direct the main character when and where to move so she’s not spotted by guards. The game has Kickstarter-funded high production values and feels right at home on touchscreen devices. It’s one of the best games we played all year.

Congratulation to Fireproof Studios and Camoflaj for making our two favorite titles in another month of great games. Also be sure to check out our other Must Have title for December, Clumsy Ninja, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Lords of Waterdeep, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Darklings, and The Shadow Sun.
