It’s been another excellent month for iOS gaming, with A+ games like the novel reinvention of the console series Hitman Go and the Escher-esque puzzle game Monument Valley. But really, one title stands out as the genre-defining game of the month: Blizzard’s Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.
Hearthstone is a free-to-play card battler that uses characters and spells from the PC series Warcraft. With several modes, competitive online play, and a deep roster of unique and interesting cards, Hearthstone offers an incredible value for your time.
What makes Hearthstone special is not just its well-balanced mechanics, but also the attention to detail that can be found at every step. Even the loading screen, with its whirling wheel of fortune, is fun to look at. After hours of playing, we’re still discovering new tricks, deck strategies, and entertaining details.
You can spend hours playing Hearthstone without having to spend any money, but if you do choose to spend, you can unlock more rare cards, or challenge other players with advanced decks in The Arena. This is a freemium experience done right.
Our runner-up for Game of the Month is Monument Valley from Ustwo, a twisting puzzle game where you have to guide a princess through impossible landscapes. By rotating the worlds and playing with the perspective, you can discover new pathways. Monument Valley is beautiful, imaginative, and occasionally confounding. We just wish that it had more levels for us to get caught up on.
