We didn’t post our weekly Free Today column yesterday due to the federal holiday. It was Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the US, and we don’t think the Reverend was talking about iPhone apps when he famously said “Free at last!”. Today, there are a lot of great games you can download free for a limited time, so click ahead to get started.
One of our favorite iOS puzzlers ever, Cover Orange is just as original as Cut The Rope. You have to place boxes and other objects into the environment before acid rain starts to fall. When it arrives, any uncovered oranges will shrivel up and rot. You’ll discover plenty of clever tricks to keep your oranges safe, and Cover Orange has a huge amount of puzzles. It’s probably the best rainy-day game we’ve ever played, and today you can pick it up for free.
Our Score: 4 out of 4
Our Bottom Line: Cover Orange joins a proud family of high-quality App Store physics puzzlers.
Who let penguins drive the car? One of Bulkypix’s newest puzzle games, Crazy Escape is all about paving over wild terrain to help free your animal friends. To play, you draw the road with your fingers, keeping the track as short as possible while breaking down fences and avoiding wolves. Crazy Escape is a charming game, so pick it up gratis while you can.
Crush the Castle
Before there was Angry Birds, there was Crush the Castle, the original iOS demolition game. In Crush the Castle, you use a trebuchet instead of a slingshot, so you have to time your shots instead of aiming them. The graphics may be less appealing than Angry Birds, but some players seem to prefer Crush the Castle’s semi-realistic look. As long as it’s free, you can easily download it and make up your own mind.
If you can tie your fingers into knots, you’ll probably enjoy playing Cross Fingers, which is like Twister for your hands. It’s a sliding-block game where you have to hold the red pieces out of the way with a finger while you move another block to the exit. Of course, you can always cheat by playing with a friend, or recruit a nimble octopus to help you out.
Our Score: 3 out of 4
Our Bottom Line: This enjoyable tangram-style puzzle game is a bit on the easy side, but controls very smoothly.
Xenocube SD and HD
Both versions of Xenocube are free for a limited time, so snag them both if you have an iPhone/iPod Touch and an iPad. This Match-3 game is a combination of a Rubik’s cube and Bejeweled. You can wrap matches around the edges of the cube, and the graphical effects are mesmerizing.
Our Score: 3 out of 4
Our Bottom Line: It won’t change the world, but XenoCube is a stylish Match-3 puzzler.
