Free Today: Beat Hazard Ultra, Extraction: Project Outbreak, and More

You’ll find plenty of free demos and pay-as-you-go freemium games on the App Store, but here are a few full games marked down to free just to attract more downloads. These games may also have paid options, but you’ll get a lot of quality entertainment just for your time. Better grab them quick, though– there’s no telling when they’ll raise the price.

Beat Hazard Ultra

Beat Hazard Ultra is an arcade shooter in the style of Geometry Wars, with a great added twist: You can use your own mp3 playlist to generate levels. Based on the style and tempo, you can get more waves of enemies, or different power-ups and perks. This unique, visually dazzling game should not be missed.

Our Score: 4 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: It’s hard to not enjoy this game.

Extraction: Project Outbreak

This zombie shooter may have a generic name, but we found the one-finger combat controls to be one of a kind. You’ll have to perform a variety of objectives, like rescuing scientists or escorting soldiers, and a storyline about the zombie outbreak unfolds as you progress. This is a good chance for you to snag a recent Chillingo game for free, provided you don’t pay for optional in-game credits.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Extraction: Project Outbreak successfully crosses simplistic one-finger controls with deep gameplay.

Robokill 2: Leviathan Five

Robokill 2: Leviathan Five (the second Robokill game, not the fifth Leviathan game) is a fun top-down, twin-stick shooter for the iPad. You’ll clomp around a maze-like spaceship, clearing each room of enemy robots and collecting bits and pieces which can improve your weapons and armor. Leveling up your robot is quite addictive, so if you like a lot of sci-fi action, give Robokill 2 a try for free.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Mostly more of the same, with a couple notable steps back, Robokill 2 is still an engaging alien-busting shooter.

Sad Princess

While we didn’t think the beat ‘em up gameplay in Sad Princess was worth paying much for, we certainly can’t argue with today’s price point of zero. In Sad Princess, you play as a spurned royal with a big club. It features basic button-mashing combat, but with the added twist of being able to summon an animal companion. Plus, the game’s anime-style visuals are outstanding, and the game has a humorous storyline and characters.

Our Score: 2 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: You won’t be happy if you download Sad Princess based solely on its looks.

Dawn of the Dead

Dawn of the Dead has gone free before, and like a zombie, it keeps trying to rise from the App Store graveyard of forgotten games. It’s a slightly cheap-feeling iOS action game, but then again, the original Romero movies had a cheap look and feel to them as well. As the iPhone equivalent of a B-movie, Dawn of the Dead offers some cheap gaming thrills for free today.

Our Score: 2 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: If you need to bust up some skulls after a particularly hard day at work, Dawn of the Dead might serve you well. But the controls might make you say, ‘Grrrr, aaargh!’
