STP Turns One!

Posted by Steve Palley, September 1st, 2009

Slide To Play launched on September 1st, 2008, after a month-plus of frenzied labor and more than a few extremely late nights.

Parents inevitably put a lot of themselves into their children, and although they may have more specific goals in mind, the overriding hope is to see them survive... grow tall... and flourish.

Let me say that we all are very proud parents today. STP has bloomed from a tiny, unknown seed of a blog into full adulthood.

Pac-Man Remix Review

Posted by Steve Palley, August 6th, 2009

A new team is at the helm of Namco Networks' iPhone efforts, spearheaded by Jonathan Kromrey--formerly of Apple's very own games group, and leader of the Texas Hold 'Em project back in the day. Kromrey has promised to overhaul Namco's iPhone strategy, which has been characterized to this point by "Remixed" versions of its arcade classics.

After a day spent playing Pac-Man Remix, we're good and ready for Kromrey to work his magic. Pac-Man's latest iPhone outing is fun, but it's also plagued by minor quality issues and runs out of content in under two hours.

@GkCHN: 1338 is my favorite. Because it's higher up then "1337".

@contester: 0110 - Peace...in binary (I learned to count binary on my hands)

Groovy. Great job, guys, and thanks to everyone who submitted an answer--we got a lot of good ones! We'll have another Twitter contest tomorrow, too, so hope springs eternal.

Posted by Steve Palley, July 28th, 2009

What hath Toy Bot wrought?! The popular series of iPhone platformers officially wrapped with the release of Toy Bot 3 last year, but we had a feeling we hadn't heard the last of him... and we were right. Kind of.

Last week, we sat down with developer IUGO at the Casual Connect conference in Seattle to take a look at Spy Bot Chronicles, an upcoming Toy Bot spin-off that's looking very promising in its unfinished state.

Updated: Archon Review

Posted by Steve Palley, July 21st, 2009

Archon has received two quick updates, standing now at version 1.2. The developer's made numerous fixes and improvements, notably to the enemy AI, which we felt was too weak the first time around.

The new "Insane" difficulty level is just that, especially when it comes to the combat portion of the game--the enemies with ranged attacks can now nail you all the way across the screen, for instance. Plus, the AI is much more canny in general, so it won't be blundering into obvious traps as often.

Cheap Shot: High Speed Chase

Posted by Steve Palley, July 16th, 2009

High Speed Chase drives you straight onto the freeway in a red sports car, guns a-blazing. It's a heady dose of instant action, making for one of the better arcade microgames we've played recently.

Zombies vs. Sheep Hands-On

Posted by Steve Palley, July 15th, 2009

Shooting gallery games, zombie games, and zombie shooting gallery games are all App Store staples. So why the heck should yet another zombie blaster attract our attention?

Because Studio Radiolares, the guys behind the Rez-like shooter Radio Flare, have actually found a way to put a unique spin on a majorly cliched game type. How'd they do it? Well... have you ever heard of El Dia de los Muertos?

STPodcast #7: Networking Extraordinaire is Out!

Posted by Steve Palley, July 14th, 2009

Yeah, yeah, we know: we're late with the podcast. Last week's episode spent several additional days in processing--we actually had to type in all those 1s and 0s by hand. On the plus side, all this extra work has resulted in one of our best episodes yet... we think.

Cheap Shot: Blend the Boss

Posted by Steve Palley, July 9th, 2009

My name's Steve Palley, and I'm the Bossman here at STP. The Big Kahuna. El Jefe Maximo. I don't take orders, I give em, and that's just the way I like it. It's the natural order of things.

But you know what? My fellow bosses and I don't feel real safe right now. We'll be living in fear until the party responsible for Blend the Boss--a sick individual who goes by the name Joe Cartoon--is hunted down and locked away forever.

Star Hogs Review

Posted by Steve Palley, July 8th, 2009

Star Hogs is part loving homage to the classic franchise Worms, part insanely technical space opera, and entirely awesome.

IUGO nailed the artillery gameplay, and then packed the game full of weapons, upgrades, features, and play modes--resulting in something that turn-based strategy lovers can really sink their teeth into.
