Artist Colony Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, February 26th, 2010

If you never used the rosebud (infinite money) cheat in The Sims, you might have done what Artist Colony has you do: control a group of simulated characters struggling to get by in life. In this case, instead of encouraging your Sims to go out and get mundane jobs to earn money, you control a group of struggling artists primarily dependent on the whims of rich old men who occasionally visit and make offers on your artists' masterpieces.

Age of Tribes Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, February 23rd, 2010

The App Store has been a great platform for new, innovative games, but it's also a place for old games to find new life. Age of Tribes is similar to the old classic Lemmings, replacing the lemmings with mindless tribespeople who have a disposition toward walking that cannot be overcome, even by fear of death.

Bejeweled 2 Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, February 17th, 2010

The word "Bejeweled" is probably as recognizable among gamers as the words "Coca-Cola" are around the world. Bejeweled is one of the best Match-3 games ever made, and it has taken the casual gaming crowd by storm ever since its inception, to the point where few mobile game libraries can be found without the presence of Bejeweled.

Cheap Shot: Hangman RSS

Posted by Riordan Frost, February 2nd, 2010

People keep up on news in a variety of ways. Some get hooked on the 24-hour news channels and become junkies for Anderson Cooper’s charm. Others turn to parody news shows like the Daily Show or Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me. Hangman RSS gives you yet another way to keep up on news: guessing. Each round of the game is focused on one or two missing words in a headline that you must fill in.

2012 Zombies Vs. Aliens Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, January 22nd, 2010

New releases on the App Store often mirror the hot topics of culture, as we all know quite well. Occasionally, developers come up with the idea of just tossing all of these hot topics together into a singular menagerie, which is exactly what happens with 2012 Zombies vs. Aliens.

Isaac Newton's Gravity Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, January 21st, 2010

It’s a commonly known fact that Isaac Newton invented gravity. We’re not sure what life was like before then, but we’re sure it was a bit more unpredictable, and it probably explains things like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, or dinosaurs with tiny arms ruling the world.

Updated: Mecho Wars Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, November 27th, 2009

Mecho Wars recently released an online multiplayer mode in an update, complete with twenty game slots to play, as well as push notifications. You can choose time limits for turns ranging from five minutes to 24 hours, and you can choose between modes that include the usual campaign mode of conquest, to the rather unusual assassination, where each side has a target unit for the other side to destroy in order to win.

Undercroft Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, October 29th, 2009

It is rare on the App Store that we find a worthwhile, extensive role-playing game that keeps us almost too addicted to write a review for it. Zenonia and The Quest come to mind here, and rightfully so, because they both are among the best RPGs currently available on the iPhone. But while Zenonia appealed to a wide audience, Undercroft faces the same issues as The Quest in its limited appeal, for several reasons.

Cocoto Kart Online Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, October 23rd, 2009

The iDevice was practically made for racing games with its nifty accelerometer, which gives the sense of driving as we tilt it left and right, more than occasionally causing some shifty glances to come our way in public. But we never really care, because we’re usually enjoying ourselves. Well, you may find yourself cursing when trying to tilt your kart in Cocoto Kart, but luckily its online features will keep you playing happily.

Real Soccer 2010 Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, October 7th, 2009

It has come to our attention that Gameloft has been busy making clones of successful franchises, from Gangstar to Dungeon Hunter. However, the word "clone" usually has negative connotations, and Gameloft’s games don't usually deserve it, as is best evidenced by their ability to win STP’s Game of the Month twice in a row. Well, Real Soccer is another great game, even if it is almost identical to FIFA 10.

FIFA 10 Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, October 7th, 2009

Soccer fans come in many types. Some just know about the major international teams, others know about their own local teams, and still others have knowledge of all the leagues and teams, even down to specific players. FIFA 10 is a game that caters to that last type of fan, as it offers over 570 teams. Luckily, it still appeals to those who don’t know much about the teams but do love the game. Those people just have to use some guesswork when it comes to team choices (favorite logo anyone?).

Family Guy: Uncensored Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, October 5th, 2009

Family Guy is one of the funniest shows on television, and its sarcastic, sick, and well-timed humor has kept us laughing since its debut. Sadly, there’s not much to laugh about in the new game, which left us sorely disappointed. It seems to us that this is another attempt by people with access to a successful name to cash in on it. Don’t get us wrong-- it does offer entertainment, and it has some of the great humor of Family Guy, but it hardly delivers enough content for the current price.

Robocalypse: Mobile Mayhem Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, October 1st, 2009

Games with a good sense of humor are, as a rule, inherently more fun to play. The makers of Robocalypse seem to understand this concept very well, because they've put humor in nearly every aspect of the game. It came as little surprise when we learn that the writers once wrote for Spongebob Squarepants.

Updated: Ravensword: The Fallen King Preview

We're just received word that Ravensword will be published by Chillingo, and submitted to the App Store by October 15 (to be released a few weeks after that, if the approval process goes smoothly). Ravensword Online, the MMO update slated for next year, will also use Chillingo's Crystal network.

The Ravensword website has also been updated with a bestiary that gives you a look at the creatures you'll fight in this game, and more details on the story.

Super Water Bomber Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, September 25th, 2009

Super Water Bomber has a protagonist that many young nerds dream of: A masked kid armed with water balloons, targeting only bullies. A playground hero, in a sense, but with a range of protection much wider than the playground, which you’ll realize as you travel through parks and suburbs to take down bully-rings and more. Sadly, being protected by this hero is probably much more fun than playing as him, which is a disappointing and often frustrating experience.

Cannons Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, September 14th, 2009

Pirates are a rough lot, constantly searching for treasure, hunting one another, and getting scurvy. However, they’ve enjoyed a cultural resurgence for some time now, and many games have adopted them as their theme. Cannons is one of these games, and though its simple name doesn’t say much about its content, it holds a great deal of puzzling for the crafty pirate at heart.

Tower Attack Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, September 11th, 2009

Finally! Ever since tower defense appeared in its thousandth installment, we’ve been wondering when someone would switch the roles of the players, putting us in the shoes of the beings trying to make it past those towers and their unlimited ammo. This game, named simply Tower Attack, gives us this clever twist on the tower defense genre.

Match 3D Flick Puzzle Review

Posted by Riordan Frost, September 3rd, 2009

3D space is often a difficult concept to master in a game, and it usually has varying degrees of success. Match 3D has the 3D concept at its core, throwing you at what looks like a giant Rubik's Cube, composed of smaller cubes with different colors and patterns. You can flick, spin, and shake your way through the sides of the cube. If it sounds disorienting already, that’s because it is.
