EA’s Frostbite Go Game Engine Coming to Mobile Platforms

Brr. Feel that chill wind? It’s from EA. The company has posted a bit of official information about its “Frostbite Go” engine, which is apparently coming to all major mobile platforms.

There have been numerous hints that Frostbite was destined to hit mobile: Last month, Kristoffer Benjamin, the Program Manager at Frostbite, mentioned the new version of the engine on Twitter. And with Epic Games working hard to bring the Unreal Engine to mobile, it was only a matter of time before EA followed with Frostbite.

Here’s the official word from Frostbite’s “History” page:

“One of our most exciting current projects is called Frostbite Go, a mobile division empowering EA game developers with Frostbite’s proven excellent workflows and features to bring true Frostbite experiences to all major mobile platforms.”

At this time, there’s no word on when Frostbite Go will debut, or which games will accompany its release.

People are buzzing about Frostbite’s potential on mobile plaforms, but the news has also given rise to more conversation about the relationship between EA and Nintendo. Frostbite technical director Johan Andersson recently claimed that technical limitations are keeping Frostbite 3 off the Wii U (for now), and yet Frostbite Go is coming to mobile platforms with significantly less processing power. EA has also pulled much of its support for Nintendo’s new console. Specific reasons are unclear at this point, but speculation and rumors offer reasons ranging from the Wii U’s tepid sales to EA’s irritation over Nintendo’s refusal to put Origin on the system.
