EA Acquires Chillingo

The Wall Street Journal reports today that Chillingo has been acquired by EA Mobile, for a reported price tag of $20 million. But they will not be picking up one of Chillingo’s biggest published games, Angry Birds, along with it.

Angry Birds developer Rovio Mobile emphatically denied that they are a part of the acquisition, tweeting that Rovio still owns the Angry Birds license. Chillingo has published a number of other successful titles as well, including Cut The Rope, Helsing’s Fire, The Hero, Modern Conflict, and Knights Rush, but it is unclear which of these titles, if any, Chillingo owns the rights to. Chillingo also runs the social gaming service Crystal.

Following the news last week of DeNA’s acquisition of Ngmoco, it looks like the mobile gaming industry is headed towards a period of consolidation. We’ll have more on these developments as we find out about them.
