One thing’s for sure: Simogo has no shortage of creativity or ambition. Their last game, Year Walk, was a Swedish folklore-inspired horror adventure with an insane companion app that went well beyond explaining the characters and symbols used in the game. Device 6, their latest game, is a more focused title, but no less original. It’s also a fantastic reading and gaming experience.
To dive too deeply into the content of Device 6 would start to eat away at the game’s surprise and charm. So if you want a “clean read” of the game, go ahead and buy it now. It’s worth it. It’s awesome.
Still here? I won’t spoil anything for you, but here are some broad strokes about what Device 6 is. Mostly what you do in this game is read. This novella-length tale tells the story of a woman who wakes up trapped in a room, and goes on from there, using a “House of Leaves”-style branching text that’s full of mysteries and curiosities. Often you’ll have to turn your iOS device left and right to follow the labyrinthine sentences along the page.
The story is also dotted with cryptic illustrations, videos, and audio, some of which are interactive. These act as puzzles that, once solved, let you progress further in the story. There’s little in the way of explanation for how to solve the puzzles, so you’ll have to pay attention as you read, and keep your eyes peeled for clues. I only got very stuck once, but most of the puzzles are tough enough to make you feel smart for solving them.
To explain more about Device 6 would do it a disservice. I enjoyed the story/game a lot, and can easily recommend it to anyone interested in diving into a moody mystery.
