The biggest sugar fiend on the App Store is back, in a game that may have a 2 in its title, but is actually the fourth entry in the series. The goal is the same as ever– to deliver candy to Om Nom’s open mouth– but they’ve added a number of tweaks and changes to keep the experience as fresh as possible.
Once again the game starts players from square one. You’ll play through snappy levels that show you the basics of the game and gradually introduce the gameplay elements, like movable boards, poppable balloons, and candy magnets. For the first time, some levels have you move Om Nom toward the candy in this one. None of these additions are all that revolutionary or surprising, but they make it feel like a new game.
Essentially, Cut the Rope 2 does the same thing the other sequels have done: given fans new levels to play and new ways to interact with the hungry little monster. It doesn’t feel revolutionary, but if you have room in your heart for more Om Nom, Cut the Rope 2 will suit you just fine.
The biggest addition is five new friends who enable Om Nom’s candy addiction by helping him get it. They’re basically just interactive level components with cartoon eyes, but they’re cute. Boo startles Om Nom when they touch, launching him into the air. Roto is a helicopter who picks things up and drops them when tapped.
In addition to eating candy, you can collect clovers in some levels and complete “missions” by beating the levels under optional conditions. Each day you play, you’re awarded power-ups like balloons or level solutions. You can even purchase skins that let you change the look of Om Nom, the candy, and your swipe trail.
But for all they’ve added, I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve been here before time and time again. Cut the Rope 2 will probably feel fresh to people who haven’t played all of Om Nom’s previous outings, but if you’ve been down this road before, there’s not much new to see. It’s fun, but it’s not new.
