Crazy Penguin Catapult 2 Review

Those bad bears are at it again! After kidnapping scores of penguins in the last Crazy Penguin Catapult game, the bears have come up with a new plot to imprison their Antarctic adversaries: sneak into the game code itself, and add so many new glitches that nobody even wants to try to rescue the penguins in this disappointing sequel.

While polar bears going all “Matrix” would have been a cool storyline, sadly this is the only possible reason we can think up for why Crazy Penguin Catapult 2 is such a soulless follow-up. The game looks and plays exactly like the previous game, which is not a bad thing by itself, but it feels rushed and shoddy instead of refined.

Like in Crazy Penguin Catapult, in this sequel you can tap the screen to launch your penguins with medieval hurling devices and then order them to dive-bomb the bears. As you attack the bears and rescue your fellow penguins, you’ll earn stars that can unlock handy new abilities like drilling through ice or changing direction in mid-air.

Here is where Crazy Penguin Catapult 2 goes wrong. Some abilities are extremely useful, like the Ninja Penguin that lets you change directions. Others are extremely useless, like a Bear Shot that lets you auto-target the next bear. The problem is, new abilities will completely replace old abilities, leaving you stuck with much worse power-ups that you can’t swap out. This makes the game pointlessly frustrating, and it’s a glaring design flaw that must be addressed in a future update.

After all, you can’t preview the abilities before you commit to them, and some stages don’t make any use of these abilities at all. If the last ability you chose is an ice-breaker, and you need to complete a stage with no ice to break, what’s the point? The only option is to reset the game and start from scratch, avoiding the bad power-ups, which is unacceptable.

In addition to this huge misstep, Crazy Penguin Catapult 2 seems much buggier than its predecessor. Your penguins will frequently get stuck on the ice, not slide as far as they should, and generally waste your time by dying without hitting any bears. You’ll even find a few typos in the instruction pages, which says to us that this game didn’t get enough time in the testing phase.

Crazy Penguin Catapult 2 also offers the same old strategy game as before, as an extra option. The turn-based game hasn’t been improved at all, graphically or otherwise. Surprisingly, multiplayer hasn’t been added for this mode either, which would be one way to make it enjoyable.

Crazy Penguin Catapult 2 is the sequel to one of our favorite games, but this one lands with a splat. Hopefully Digital Chocolate will fix the more glaring mistakes (just let us switch out the lame power-ups instead of replacing our favorites), and we can try to enjoy the additional levels for a game we used to like a lot.
