Game of the Month, February 2010: Plants vs Zombies

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, March 1st, 2010

In a month filled with triple-A iPhone titles like Transformers G1: Awakening, Brothers in Arms 2: Global Front, Parachute Ninja, and Artist Colony, two games stood out for us as the best of the best. One has vegetarian zombies, and the other has lots of puns about "ore".

Game of the Month, January 2010: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, February 1st, 2010

Sometimes, we have a hard task picking the very best iPhone game from the hundreds we play every month. This month, however, it was no contest. Rockstar's epic crime drama GTA: Chinatown Wars won hands-down.

Game of the Month, December 2009: NOVA

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, December 31st, 2009

The rate of big new games ramped up again in December, and several of our favorite brands like Need for Speed, The Simpsons, and Pac-Man appeared in Must Have games. However, a new brand also emerged which was comfortingly familiar. That game is the Halo look-alike, NOVA.

Game of the Month, November 2009: World Series of Poker Hold'em Legend

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, December 1st, 2009

It's been a good month for iPhone gaming, especially due to indie hits like Smashed, PathPix Pro, and Harbor Havoc 3D. Big games like Rogue Planet, Eliminate Pro, and Monopoly impressed us as well. However, this month we're giving our top prize to the single best card game you can buy on the App Store: Glu's World Series of Poker Hold'em Legend.

Game of the Month, October 2009: Beneath a Steel Sky: Remastered

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, November 1st, 2009

This month we're honoring a game that some have played before on the PC, perhaps as long ago as 1994. But for all those newcomers who first played Beneath a Steel Sky: Remastered last month on the iPhone, we're proud to recognize it as one of the very best adventure games you can buy in the App Store and our October Game of the Month.

Game of the Month, September 2009: Dungeon Hunter

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, October 1st, 2009

Well, looks like Gameloft pulled it off again. Last month we were blown away by the epic open-world crime game Gangstar and this month we fell for the Diablo-esque isometric action RPG Dungeon Hunter.

Game of the Month, August 2009: Gangstar

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, September 1st, 2009

This was a long, hot summer month, but we had some very cool games to keep us occupied. Indie titles like Spider and Alive-4-Ever blew us away with their originality and quality. Wolfenstein RPG is one of the best games of the month, as well. They all deserve a big shout-out. If you haven't played those games yet, we say, go buy them.

But our top prize, Game of the Month, goes to the most expansive, polished crime-spree adventure we've played on the iPhone: Gameloft's Gangstar: West Coast Hustle.

Game of the Month, July 2009: Rolando 2

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, August 1st, 2009

We've played a lot of great games this month, including some high-quality iPhone remakes like Monkey Island: Special Edition, Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, and Resident Evil 4. Even with this tough competition, our choice for the best iPhone game of July goes to Rolando 2 by ngmoco.

Game of the Month, June 2009: Real Racing

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, July 1st, 2009

Building off the growing momentum, June was another stellar month for iPhone gaming. In June 2009 we flicked knights to their grisly doom in Knights Onrush, ran-and-jumped through whimsical worlds in Castle of Magic, and blew up enemy fighter jets online in F.A.S.T.

However, we think June 2009 will mostly be remembered for one major game: Real Racing.

Updated: Game Of The Month, May 2009: Peggle!

Posted by Steve Palley, June 16th, 2009

The 99 cent Peggle sale is over, and the results should surprise no one. According to a post on MTV's Multiplayer Blog, the game made the leap from about #60 on the US App Store to reach a high of #1 in a few short days (it's at #2 currently). A PopCap spokesman stated that "[PopCap] sold nearly as many units in those four days as they had in the 3 weeks afters the game’s launch."

Selling by volume, rather than by revenue, is great for the consumer in some ways--when you can get a...

Game Of The Month, April 2009: Glyder!

Posted by Steve Palley, May 1st, 2009

We played a lot of stellar games at Slide To Play in April, so there were many candidates for our inaugural Game Of The Month award. Leaf Trombone: World Stage taught us the joys of performing tunes in front of a global audience. Perfect Balance applied exquisite physics torture. And we enjoyed slaughtering many a Nazi in Wolfenstein 3D.

Even after such a strong month, one game stood out from all the rest: Glu's Glyder.
