Cheap Shot: Dizzypad

Posted by Jordan Minor, March 2nd, 2010

Ever since Frogger hit arcades back in 1981, videogame frogs have all had to face incredible obstacles whenever moving from one place to another. In Dizzypad from Nimblebit, not even their lily pad-filled pond is a safe haven for these unfortunate amphibians. However, what may be an arduous quest for frogs ends up being an entertaining distraction for gamers.

Cheap Shot: Colorbind

Posted by Tim Rattray, February 24th, 2010

One great thing about the iPhone is that it allows you to play with paper without the paper cuts. Had Colorbind been released as a physical toy, it would likely have rivaled Toyota in recalls due to injuries. However, in digital form, this mind-bending puzzler about folding paper strips over colored dots is extremely engaging.

Cheap Shot: Noby Noby Boy

Posted by Tim Rattray, February 22nd, 2010

There are few things as disappointing to us as a lame tie-in app for a console game that might have worked great on the iPhone. While a port of the PS3 game Noby Noby Boy would have had us excited, this cash-in failed to entertain us for more than five minutes.

Cheap Shot: Robot Rampage

Posted by Andrew Groen, February 18th, 2010

In Robot Rampage, you're placed in the giant metal shoes of an alien destroyer sent to Earth to level block after block of buildings while incinerating the very best that the puny Earthling armies have to throw at you. If that doesn't have you sold already, then we don't know what's going to do the trick.

Cheap Shot: Gold Keeper 2

Posted by Andrew Groen, February 16th, 2010

If Gold Keeper 2 were released as a free update to Gold Keeper, it would have been regarded as a relatively minor update that many would have neglected to even download. In short, if you already have the original Gold Keeper, there is no reason to buy the sequel.

Cheap Shot: Tractor Beam

Posted by Andrew Groen, February 12th, 2010

With the huge success of Doodle Jump, the critical darling that is Canabalt, and the recent reveal of Avalanche Game, the never-ending platformer genre is really taking off. Tractor Beam isn't exactly a platformer due to its unique method of movement, but it's every bit as worthy as those other games.

Cheap Shot: Bird Strike

Posted by Jonathan Zungre, February 4th, 2010

We like a bloody two-stick shooter as much as the next gamer, but Bird Strike disarmed us with its relentless cuteness. It's a game made with Pixar-like cartoony charm, and you can't help but cheer on your little bird when you slingshot him from his bird wire and direct him to collect boosting rockets on his way to space. Confession: We may have giggled.

Thor Review

Posted by Tim Rattray, February 4th, 2010

From the title alone, you might think Thor would be nonstop Nordic thunder god action on your iPhone. Get ready for disappointment. In this game Thor is no mighty thunder god, but a bumbling adolescent boy.

Cheap Shot: Zwirn

Posted by Tim Rattray, February 3rd, 2010

When we first opened Zwirn, what we saw was a rope and two white dots. Our first instinct was to pull the multicolored twine across the aged wooden surface, so that one end touched both dots. Impressively, Zwirn teaches you what to do without a single menu or instruction.

Cheap Shot: Hangman RSS

Posted by Riordan Frost, February 2nd, 2010

People keep up on news in a variety of ways. Some get hooked on the 24-hour news channels and become junkies for Anderson Cooper’s charm. Others turn to parody news shows like the Daily Show or Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me. Hangman RSS gives you yet another way to keep up on news: guessing. Each round of the game is focused on one or two missing words in a headline that you must fill in.

Cheap Shot: Puzzle Path

Posted by Chris Reed, January 15th, 2010

For a game named by Captain Obvious, the execution of Puzzle Path is pretty imaginative. The title pretty much sums up the game, removing any need for marketing mumbo jumbo on the App Store page. In fact, we could just tack on a score and use the words "puzzle path" as our whole review, and you probably wouldn't feel too cheated.

Cheap Shot: Blockoban

Posted by Joe Hunt, January 13th, 2010

Trying to complete a difficult level of Blockoban can be about as pleasing to the cranium as getting bashed by a bag of bricks. That's not to say the game is unfair, it just requires brainpower, and ours feel like mush from playing too many zombie games. Luckily, this puzzler is paced just right, easing you in with 100 free levels that will likely get you hooked.

Turf Wars Online Review

Posted by Jonathan Zungre, January 13th, 2010

Let us tell you about the best two week addiction we've ever had. It's called Turf Wars and it's a crime game that uses Google Maps to let you lay claim to real-world turf, based on where you're physically located. Want to take over your neighborhood, or be slumlord of your college campus? Now you can, and everyone else playing the game will know it. It's one of the first in a new genre of games some are calling "augmented reality".

Finger Stone is a modest puzzler that, when used correctly, just might help you stick to those difficult New Year's resolutions. For instance, you could quit smoking and start taking Finger Stone breaks instead. Or you could go all out and get a job, and play Finger Stone on the bus to work.

Cheap Shot: geoSpark

Posted by Grant Holzhauer, December 21st, 2009

The appeal and success of Geometry Wars and its sequel on the Xbox 360 are undeniable. Geometry Wars single-handedly helped refine the twin-stick shooter and is easily recognized by its distinct visuals. The iPhone has also shown that it can pull off this type of game, with countless variations hitting the App Store and each doing quite well. In an interesting turnaround, geoSpark copies the look of Geometry Wars while changing the gameplay.

Sure, you've survived the zombie apocalypse dozens of times before in videogames. But have you survived the anime-themed zombie apocalypse? Twin Blades offers a simplified forsaken uprising in the form of a hack-n-shoot side-scroller that is one of the most visually breathtaking games yet released on the App Store. Cheap Shot: Boom It Up!

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, December 11th, 2009

At 99 cents, Gamevil's one-button cannonball run is meant to be a casual alternative to their more intimidating games like Zenonia and Hybrid: Eternal Whisper. It's not that we don't like casual games, we just don't care for this one in particular.

Cheap Shot: Fore

Posted by Andrew Groen, December 11th, 2009

Golfing games and apps are about as common on the App Store as tower defense games and money management apps, so you can imagine us yawning a bit when Fore came across our desk. Developers just don't seem to tire of releasing these games for their middle-aged-business-man-with-deep-pockets target demographic.
