Caliber Advantage iOS Controller Announced

Just when you thought it was safe to play games using your iPhone’s touchscreen, iFrogz has announced a new physical controller for the iPhone 5 called the Caliber Advantage. The company has also announced a partnership with Epic Games and Chair Entertainment, and promises more companies will make their games compatible with the device by launch. The Caliber Advantage will debut for $69.99 in the first half of 2013.

The Caliber Advantage looks kind of like an iPhone 5 case, with retractible controls you can pull out whenever you want to play a compatible game. It has two analog nubs, a D-pad, four face buttons, and two shoulder buttons. Like most iOS accessories, it connects to the device using Bluetooth. iFrogz claims the lithium ion battery in the Caliber Advantage will last for 150 hours.

The Caliber Advantage isn’t the first physical controller to hit the market, with iCade and Gameloft controllers already available to purchase. But iFrogz is working with Epic Games and Chair Entertainment to ensure that at least some titles developed using the Unreal Engine 3 will be compatible. No other partnerships have been announced, but at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, iFrogz is demonstrating Tetris on the device, which hints towards a possible EA partnership as well.

When the Caliber Advantage becomes available, you’ll be able to purchase it here. You can read more about the controller in the company’s press release.
