Big Game Night: Modern Combat 3, Shantae, and More

It’s Wednesday, the biggest night of the week for iOS gamers. That’s because most of the week’s big games launch tonight at 8pm Pacific, 11pm Eastern. This week, we’ve got a new first-person shooter from Gameloft, a port of a DSiWare critical darling, an old-school-style RPG, and more. Read on for details.

Dawn of Magic

Honestly, we’ve gotten a little burned out on oldschool-style RPGs of late, but Dawn of Magic still looks like it might be worth a shot. With its cartoonish graphics, colorful character designs, and promise of grand adventure, it’s got our interest piqued. Whether it will impress us once we get our hands on it remains to be seen. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that it’s free to download.

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation

When it comes to first-person shooters on the App Store, Gameloft is the company to beat. Fallen Nation is the latest in the Modern Combat series, which is, ah, “inspired” by the massively popular Modern Warfare series on consoles and PC. Will this third installment live up to expectations?

Riptide GP

It’s quite possible that jet ski racing has never looked this good on iOS devices before. This game features realistic water effects, six jet skis, 12 tracks, and loads of tricks. The developer recommends using a fourth generation device to play Riptide GP, and if you watch the video, you’ll see why. This game game looks gorgeous.

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge is a port of a DSiWare game that was released last year to very positive reviews. It’s a side-scrolling beat-’em-up adventure with a Metroidvania-style template. In other words, you’ll spend a lot of time exploring the game world and upgrading your abilities. We’ll see how the game controls on the touchscreen when it hits the App Store tonight.
