Big Game Night: Layton, Contra, and More

Wednesday is Big Game Night, the night when developers release their most-anticipated titles on the App Store in hopes that Apple give them a feature slot tomorrow. This week is particularly big, with releases like Professor Layton and a revamp of classic Contra. Most of these games will go live at 11pm EST. Read on for details, pricing, and links.

Layton Brothers Mystery Room

Nintendo DS gamers are familiar with the Professor Layton series, but this will be the first time it’s appeared on iOS. This game stars Layton’s son Alfendi and his new assistant Detective Constable Lucy Baker. Why it’s called “Layton Brothers” is the first mystery I want to solve, but the game gives you two cases for free, before having you open your pocketbook to buy the rest through in-app purchase– just like Phoenix Wright.

Samurai Showdown II

Old-school arcade fans probably remember slicing up newbs in Samurai Showdown II way back in the ’90s. It’s a fighting game with 15 swordsmen to choose from, and your goal is to cut through your enemies in one-on-one fights. Like Street Fighter IV, the game has a simplified button layout option along with the option for a full button set-up. Unfortunately, multiplayer matches are limited to local-only.

Contra Evolution

Contra Evolution is actually already available. It’s a revamped version of the most classic of side-scrolling shooters. In it, you play as a soldier who single-handedly fights off an entire alien invasion like it’s no big deal (especially with the 30 lives code). It’s loaded with level variety, cool weapon choices, and thousands of aliens to riddle with bullets. The only question is whether the touchscreen controls will be responsive enough to handle the carnage.

Anodyne Mobile

With an aesthetic similar to older Zelda games, Anodyne Mobile is an action RPG set in subconscious dream worlds in the hero’s head. It looks very cool, and the original PC game was well received by critics. We’re looking forward to this one.

Siegecraft TD

We were huge fans of the original Siegecraft when it came out in 2011. This follow-up changes the formula pretty drastically by turning it into a tower defense game. With a full campaign and a unique Risk-like multiplayer mode, Siegecraft TD promises to give gamers loads of content. Read our hands-on preview for more information.

League of Evil 3

Ravenous Games has been churning out side-scrolling action platformers for a long time now, and we’re glad they’re not letting up on the gas pedal. We gave Must Have ratings to the first two League of Evil games, and we’re hoping the third lives up to the same high standards.
