Big Game Night: Agricola, Cling Thing, and More

Wednesday, of course, is Big Game Night on the App Store, the night when many big developers release their games in hopes that Apple will feature them in iTunes. With E3 hoarding the industry’s attention this week, we’re not seeing many huge names in the line-up tonight, but there’s still some good stuff. We’ve selected our picks for the biggest games hitting the market tonight at 11 p.m. EST.

Farm sims might seem like the most boring thing imaginable to newbies, but when you start playing a good one, it’s impossible to stop until you’ve reaped what you’ve sowed. Based on a popular board game, Agricola boasts some deep game mechanics that will surely draw even the most reluctant farmers into the agricultural fold. We’re looking forward to playing this one tonight.

    Cling Thing

Cling Thing is a physics game about an ugly critter who– you guessed it– clings to things. The gameplay is reminiscent of Tentacles: Enter the Dolphin, so you make the ugly blob’s tendrils stick to surfaces as you maneuver him through puzzle-like levels. With three stars to collect in each of the 96 levels, this game may have some legs– er, tendrils.

    Despicable Me: Minion Rush

Despicable Me: Minion Rush is an over-the-shoulder runner from Gameloft. Think Temple Run, but set in the Despicable Me universe, with goofy voice acting, colorful environments, and loads of creative twitch gameplay. Like many endless runners, the game starts out slow but you eventually gain speed and things get tricky. You may die, but you’ll probably die having fun.

Pyramus is a real-time strategy game that takes place in deep space. You play as the humans, just trying to get your exploration on, when aliens swoop in and try to take out your fleet. The game has 20 missions, with different ship types for humans and aliens, adding up to what could be an exciting RTS game.

Crush is a fast-paced puzzle game from the makers of Bombcats. Blocks pour onto the screen, and it’s your job to clear the way for more and more blocks by tapping on the screen. To make things interesting, Crush has three gameplay modes and six recharging power-ups that you can use strategically to rack up a high score. The App Store description says that you’re doing great if you can stay alive for more than two minutes. That sounds like a challenge we’re willing to accept.
