Hero of Sparta Review

What are you doing right now? Right this moment. Are you killing time at work? Maybe idly browsing at your house or in the coffee shop, figuring out the next iPhone game you’re going to buy on the App Store? May we humbly submit that you’d rather be killing hordes of mythical creatures as the King of Sparta? Because you would, trust us. (more…)

The Price Is Right Review

The Price is Right has long been one of the great shared television experiences in the United States. Sure, other game shows have come and gone, but there’s no hegemony in TV-based cultural consciousness like the one Bob Barker set up decades ago. The Price Is Right iPhone game has had a high bar set for it, and while it captures the spirit of being told to “come on down,” that isn’t enough for us to recommend it to you. (more…)

Touchgrind Review

Our skateboarding experience, we admit, has been small in scope and depth. We played Tony Hawk. We like that Lupe Fiasco song….. and that’s pretty much it. We don’t know how to do any of those tricks we got our video game version of Tony to do. But we used to love SSX, the fabulous snowboarding series from EA, even though we’re terrible at snowboarding. Perhaps Touchgrind, we thought, could similarly narrow that gap–a tall order, to be sure. (more…)

Fastlane Street Racing Review

Have you ever taken a drive? We mean a leisurely, Sunday-afternoon type drive; one where if it were a walk it’d be called a stroll, a loop around the streets your daily commute doesn’t take you. That type of thing. Do you know what we mean? Yeah, Fastlane Street Racing is the opposite of that. It’s the most realistic, console-like racer available on the iPhone, and it will either thrill or intimidate you, depending on what kind of gamer you are. (more…)

Pole Position Remix Review

We, like you, fondly remember the old days of gaming–two button controllers, devastatingly inaccurate D-pads, and games with more pixels than common sense. Pole Position is one such game from the halcyon days of our youth, and when we booted it up for the iPhone, we were excited. (more…)

Armado Review

Armado is a side-scrolling platformer that brings to mind what might happen if Sonic and Mario had an armadillo child. It’s also the kind of game we love: beautifully designed, unique, and fun. We had a great time putting Armado the armadillo through his paces, and we’re pretty sure you will, too. (more…)

Paradox 3000 Review

Paradox 3000 is a great game for when you want to just shut off your brain and poke around on your iPhone screen. It’s a pipe puzzle game that gives you widely varied difficulty levels to keep you interested, simple gameplay, and, ultimately, more entertainment than you might expect. (more…)

Multi Quiz Review

Multi Quiz, a multiple-choice trivia game fuelled entirely by user-generated content, might end up being a quick, fun way to test your knowledge, with enough interesting quizzes. The problem is that someone needs to write them first. (more…)

Blackbeard’s Assault Review

When my father taught me to sail, I was an old 7; wise in ways no child should be. He showed me how to tie a jib, to hoist the main sail, to use a sextant, to scan the horizon, and, above all, how to pirate… wait just a second. As it turns out, that wasn’t us, it was Blackbeard the Pirate. You see, we’ve been playing Blackbeard’s Assault, and it seems to have taken over our lives. It’s that good. A frantic Match-3 puzzle game with bright graphics, interesting levels, and a charmingly silly story, Blackbeard’s Assault has become one of our favorites. (more…)

Surface to Air Mayhem Review

Surface to Air Mayhem is pretty awesome. What, you want more subtlety? Well, you won’t find it here. Save your Military Industrial Complex conversations for the coffee house, and go debate the role of the military in society in school. Surface to Air Mayhem doesn’t waste its time with these conceits, and the game experience is all the better for it. This Missile Command clone is fast, violent, fun, and a great value at $2.99. Clusterball Arcade Review

Golf, said Mark Twain, is a good walk spoiled. Golfing is a series of frustrations compounded like interest, and used golf clubs are always for sale somewhere the way baseball mitts never are. But golf also allows you moments of perfect physical grace, just often enough to addict you. Clusterball Arcade reminds us of golf. By our fourth or fifth go-round, we hit our sweet spot and developed a passion for the game… but by the time we got to the end, we wanted to chuck our iPhone into the nearest pond. (more…)

Raging Thunder Review

Poorly titled, massively anticipated, and wonderfully realized, Raging Thunder isn’t for everyone. Those for whom it’s made, though, will find it hard to put down. More Burnout or Ridge Racer than Mario Kart, this is a serious arcade-style racing game that packs a great multiplayer mode as well. (more…)
