Developer Rovio announced yesterday that Angry Birds has been downloaded half a billion times. That’s billion, with a B. Since the world’s population reached 7 billion just the other day, that means that a major chunk of humanity has flung at least a few cartoon birds at little green pigs.
They’re counting all versions of Angry Birds, including the original, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio. And they’re counting downloads across all platforms, which means iPhone, iPad, Android devices, PC, Mac, etc. Still, for a franchise that first appeared in December of 2009, racking up 500 million downloads is an astounding accomplishment.
For reference, Wii Sports, the best-selling console game of all time, has sold 76 million copies. Across all platforms, Black Ops has sold 15 million copies, and Halo 3 has sold 14.5 million copies, according to Wikipedia.
Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said, “This is a fantastic landmark achievement for us, and we’re extremely delighted to see such an incredible amount of people enjoying our games.”
According to Bloomberg, Rovio is considering going public in 2012. The company is valued internally at over a billion dollars.
