The RPG crowd might spend hours with a new game to uncover its depths, but Gamevil tried to target the casual audience with Vanquish: The Oath of Brothers instead. This time, they ended up with a simplistic hack ’n slash game that isn’t as good as their other titles.

Rise of the Triad Coming to iPhone
Survey: iPhone Development On The Rise
Developer momentum behind iPhone looks set to continue this year, with news that support is on the rise further backing up claims that the format is set for a Wii-beating 2010. This optimism is fueled by the results of a survey carried out by Gamasutra's sister service Game Developer Research. The site recently questioned more than 800 videogame professionals in an effort to predict just which platforms are on the up and which are due for a slump.
Cheap Shot: Hellkid: Hook and Jump
Take one part Hook Champ and one part Canabalt, mix them together and what do you get? You get Hellkid, a fun little high-score game that's a successful marriage of those two iPhone hits.
Replay Value: Saturday, February 6
It's nice to have a break. This week wasn't quite as busy in the world of the iPhone as the last few were, but that doesn't mean it was boring. The possible confirmation of retro-styled Sonic 4 coming to the iPhone made many gamers happy, and some great games that earned our top score hit the App Store, too. Because you might have been bogged down at work or in a coma for the past week, we've assembled this week's stories into a neatly-wrapped package after the jump.

Heavy Mach 2 Review
The first Heavy Mach was a well-oiled tank shooter that featured metric tons of lead-pumping action, but little in the way of level variety. The sequel delivers the same awesome metal-on-metal violence, but dispenses with traditional level progression in favor of open-world, mission-based gameplay. The question is, do the modifications turn the sequel into a locked-and-loaded war machine, or a wheeze-powered peashooter?
First Details of Hook Champ Follow-Up, Avalanche Game
Hook Champ is one of the personal favorites of many Slide to Play staff members, and we recently upgraded our score of the game to "Must Have" status. So it's with great joy that we anticipate Rocketcat Games' successor to Hook Champ, tentatively titled Avalanche Game.
2360: Battle for Cydonia Review
Developers taking chances is something that we’ll always respect. Sometimes, things work out and these games inspire a whole new set of clones. When games fail to perfectly execute a new concept, lessons are learned that the whole development community can benefit from. In the case of 2360: Battle for Cydonia, it’s a full-on assault to break new ground. In it, you'll find a mix of the mechanics and gameplay structures from shooters, role-playing adventures, and real-time strategy. Does it all mesh together successfully or does it end up being an unnecessarily complex disappointment?
Pocket Chef Review
We're all for games that expand the marketplace. There's only so much racing and shooting that you can do in videogames before you want to take a break and just cook a nice gazpacho. However, Pocket Chef provides such tedious and irrelevant minigames that it may turn you off to the concept of eating.
Cheap Shot: Bird Strike
We like a bloody two-stick shooter as much as the next gamer, but Bird Strike disarmed us with its relentless cuteness. It's a game made with Pixar-like cartoony charm, and you can't help but cheer on your little bird when you slingshot him from his bird wire and direct him to collect boosting rockets on his way to space. Confession: We may have giggled.
Fishlabs: iPad Completes Apple's Assault on Gaming
Developer reception to last week's official iPad unveiling continues to flood in, almost all offering a positive take on Apple's new device. Indeed, one constant theme in the multitude of responses seems to be that, rather than taking on the role of iPhone successor, most believe the iPad will actually complement Apple's current line-up.
